Nvidia ceased production of the Xbox’s GPU in August 2005, which marked the end of Xbox production and the quick release of the Xbox 360 on November 22, 2005. The Xbox 360 had superior storage, audio and video capabilities compared to the original Xbox.

Components

The Xbox was the first to wield a hard disk drive, used primarily for storing game saves and content downloaded from Xbox Live. This eliminated the need for separate memory cards (although some older consoles, such as the TurboGrafx-CD, Sega CD and Sega Saturn had featured built-in battery backup memory prior to 2001). An Xbox user could rip music from standard audio CDs to the hard drive, and these songs were used for the custom soundtracks in some games.[10]

The Xbox was the first gaming product to feature Dolby Interactive Content-Encoding Technology, which allows real-time Dolby Digital encoding in game consoles. Previous game consoles could only use Dolby Digital 5.1 during non-interactive “cut scene” playback.[11]

The Xbox is based on commodity PC hardware and is much larger and heavier than its contemporaries. This is largely due to a bulky tray-loading DVD-ROM drive and the standard-size 3.5 inch hard drive. The Xbox has also pioneered safety features, such as breakaway cables for the controllers to prevent the console from being pulled from the surface it rests on.

Several internal hardware revisions have been made in an ongoing battle to discourage modding (hackers continually updated modchip designs in an attempt to defeat them), to cut manufacturing costs, and to make the DVD-ROM drive more reliable (some of the early units’ drives gave Disc Reading Errors due to the unreliable Thomson DVD-ROM drives used). Later generation units that used the Thomson TGM-600 DVD-ROM drives and the Philips VAD6011 DVD-ROM drives were still vulnerable to failure that rendered the consoles either unable to read newer discs or caused them to halt the console with an error code usually indicating a PIO/DMA identification failure, respectively. These units were not covered under the extended warranty.

In 2002 Microsoft and Nvidia entered arbitration over a dispute on the pricing of Nvidia’s chips for the Xbox.[12] Nvidia’s filing with the SEC indicated that Microsoft was seeking a US million discount on shipments for NVIDIA’s fiscal year 2002. Microsoft alleged violations of the agreement the two companies entered, sought reduced chipset pricing, and sought to ensure that Nvidia fulfill Microsoft’s chipset orders without limits on quantity. The matter was privately settled on February 6, 2003.[13]

Launch-era Xbox gaming units were made in Hungary and the controllers made mostly in Indonesia.

The Xbox controller features two analog sticks, a pressure sensitive directional pad, two analog triggers, a Back button, a Start button, two accessory slots and six 8-bit analog action buttons (A/Green, B/Red, X/Blue, Y/Yellow, and Black and White buttons.)[14] The standard Xbox controller (also known as the “Duke” controller) was originally the Xbox controller for all territories except Japan. The Duke controller has been criticized for being bulky compared to other video game controllers (it was awarded “Blunder of the Year” by Game Informer in 2001[15] and a Guinness World Record for the biggest controller in Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition 2008, as well as being ranked the second worst video game controller ever by IGN editor Craig Harris.[16]). The Controller S, a smaller, lighter Xbox controller, was originally the standard Xbox controller only in Japan (codenamed “Akebono”),[17] designed for users with smaller hands.[18][19]

The Controller S was released in other territories by popular demand, and eventually replaced the standard controller in the Xbox’s retail package, with the larger original controller available as an accessory. An 8 MB removable solid state memory card can be plugged into the controllers, onto which game saves can either be copied f

  1. It’s around 450 for the xbox, the games and the headset then it’s like 60 for a hard drive and you get 1 month of live free when you join and if your using wifi you need the adapter which is 100

  2. Ok, personally i recommend the 360 premium. (pro – white.)

It’s only a little more expensive than the arcade, and it’s a lot better. This costs £169.99.
    It includes:
    1 Wireless controller
    1 Ethernet cable
    1 Xbox 360 Headset
    1 Hybrid video cable
So that’s a pretty good deal.

It also has a lot better memory:
Arcade: 512mb memory card, 256mb onboard, 256mb memory unit
Premium (pro): 60gb (HDD,) and 20gb (HDD)

Sometimes the premium (pro) comes a long with games, it just depends where you shop – they’re not very good most of the time, though.

Modern Warfare 2: £44.99 – £49.99 (roughly, i got mine for £49.99, it just depends where you shop.)

Halo 3: You can pick up a copy at £9.99 – (amazon, but by the time you add postage etc it will probably be £12 or something.)
But at retail price, i’ve seen it at about £15.99 – £19.99.

Gears of war 2: It’s about £20 new, but you could probably get it cheaper second hand/or at amazon.

Two more wireless controllers would cost £50.00 all together.

    Xbox live:
    First month is free.
    +1 month subscription: About £5 i think.
    +5 month subscription: £15.
    +12 month subscription: About £20-25

And the router for xbox live (USB into the back of your xbox) costs £59.99 usually, but i picked one up on special offer in GAME, for £49.99.

    So, if you got:

    Xbox 360 Pro
    Modern Warfare 2
    Halo 3
Xbox LIVE (12 months is the best value)
    +Two wireless controllers
    (It comes with a microphone)
Wireless xbox router (needed to connect for xbox live)

That would come to a total of roughly: £380, give or take £10-£15 or so.
If you bought an arcade with all the extras – and not a pro – it would cost about £340. (You’re only saving about £30-£40 actually, and to be honest i think the pro has much better value.)

Hope this helps! I definitely reccomend the Xbox 360 pro, and 12 months xbox live membership.

  3. 360 arcade- $200
controllers-$40 dollars per controller but the xbox comes with one
headsets- range from $14 dollars to $40 dollars depending on the quality u want
    MW2-$40 on amazon
Halo 3- regular halo 3 is $27 but ODST which come with all the map packs is $60
    Gears- is $25
Xbox live- u get free trial with the 360 but after that is $50 a year
If u have wifi u need a adapter which is $90 on amazon

so the overall price with 3 extra controllers, the cheap headset,a year of live, and just halo 3 would be $476 this does not include the adapter

i would personally recommend the elite since it has more memory and is an overall improvement to the 360 pro. but its is $300 instead of the $200 arcade 360

So the overall price for everything with the elite… $576
    Amount of fun: PRICELESS

  4. For the hole thing, 150 for the 360 (because its used) headset comes free with most things so you should’int charge for it, For the 3 controllers you should add 20$ extra, for all the games, halo 3 used is 20$, mw2 30$, gears of war 2 20$ so add another 70$… and unless the xbox live card is gonna depend on what the card is… is it 12 months or 3? Also, If your refering to as in you used the card… sorry to say it gives xbox live to your account, not the xbox making it useless…

    So
    3 month=5$
    12=25$ extra

So add it all up 245$ with 3 months
    265$ with 12 months…

I know it dosen’t seem like much but keep this in mind.

The arcade only has a misely half a gig of memorie… witch means there gonna hve to pay 100+$ for an upgrade if they want DLc and extra content.. and trust me THEY WILL.
